According to collinsdictionary.com, in British English, stasis is defined as a state or condition in which there is no action or progress; static situation
As a millennial, one of the things that I don’t understand is the obsession that many hold in trying to understand the millennial generation.
We are a tricky generation. Stuck between having a childhood without a cellphone, and then being swept into a world of technology as we grew up.
I remember seeing the large Apple iMac desktops sitting in my 1st grade class. I remember dial-up Internet. Do we still have that option, when you live out in the country? Anyway, millennials are in a tricky spot. As mentioned, we are a tricky generation.
Personally, I do not know if I should join the Gen Z’s, or yell at them to get off my lawn with my Boomer buds. Let’s be honest, Generation X gets forgotten about in jokes. That can either be a good or bad thing.
As a millennial that grew up in a rural part of the country, I saw hardship. I also saw the ability it took and how a hard day’s work would earn you your paycheck.
I witnessed multiple people just living their lives. Living their lives in such routine, that it seemed normal to just ‘be.’
Being is where we can become sucked into stasis. Meaning, we begin to give up on our aspirations or our dreams.
As a millennial, I have witnessed the ‘ways’ of the older generation. The older generations are stereotyped to not challenge the status quo as much as the younger generation. There are a few ‘stirrers’ mixed into the group, but it is not as noticeable as the younger generations making a fuss about what is wrong, and what is right. Of course, this is just based on my personal experience.
Have you ever wondered why that is? Why the older generations just seem to accept things and ‘go with the flow?’ An assumption: probably because the world they grew up in, there were different societal pressures they faced. Or- they are the same as today, but today, more people speak up about issues that are within our communities.
Then, there is me. My generation. Sure, there are people in every generation that are the wave-makers and the go-getters. But- at times, personally I feel like I am in stasis.
Is it because I grew up watching a generation before me, not make as much ‘trouble,’ as the ones that came after me? Is it because I am more capable of making the choice of what to become involved with?
I think the reason that people feel like there is no action or progress in their lives is because we let the outside world get to us. The dreamers become exhausted while trying to dream and create. The reformers get tired and lazy because no one can agree on anything. What is the point anyway?
This mentality is hard to work through and recognize. It is much easier staying put and staying in place than it is to push forward and be the best version of yourself.
Being stuck can be contributed to many things going on within the world and specifically our country. However, if each of us gives up on our passions and pours water onto our inner flame, who are we letting win?
Not ourselves, that is who. It is time to stop making excuses because things are a certain way around you.
Feeling like you are floating in stasis, can be temporary. It is time to rise up and remember the dreamer, believer, and achiever you are.
